What happened
LoyaltyLobby reports that IHG One Rewards quietly replaced its Hertz rental bonus of 1,500 points to start a rental plus 500 points a day for elite members or 100 for others, with 10 IHG points per dollar of base fare. The change applies to members booking Hertz through IHG Trip Extras and was made with no notice.
The new rate appears to cover only the daily base fare shown on IHG Trip Extras, before fees and add-ons. Most rentals will earn far fewer points unless the car is expensive. IHG terms still list Hertz among activities that earn elite-qualifying points. LoyaltyLobby found no documented confirmation that the new rate still counts toward status.
Trip.com has quoted Hertz 50% below IHG portal rates for the same cars, LoyaltyLobby reports. Buying IHG points at 0.5 US cents each during frequent sales can beat earning them on a cheap Hertz booking unless qualifying points are needed. Book Hertz at the cheapest rate and do not count on the old 1,500-point bonus.
