Lufthansa lets some skip unused flights on Germany tickets

What happened

View from the Wing reports that Lufthansa demanded €414 from a passenger who skipped a final flight, and that the airline has a formal process to cancel unused segments without recalculating remaining fares.

The process covers German residents and tickets whose origin or destination is in Germany, if the passenger intended to fly the original itinerary and can prove a qualifying reason arose after booking. A Frankfurt connection does not qualify a nonresident. View from the Wing says a Frankfurt to Chicago to Frankfurt ticket can qualify, while a Chicago to Frankfurt to Athens trip that only touches Germany does not. Booking a cheaper connecting itinerary to skip a flight is excluded. Illness or force majeure after purchase can qualify. Without proof, Lufthansa can recalculate the fare.

Requests use Lufthansa’s English form with document uploads and a declaration of original booking intent. Travel agents cannot process the request. Medical diagnoses should not be submitted. Unused flights are canceled. Remaining segments keep their fares. A new ticket number is emailed after review.

If a Lufthansa segment has to be dropped and the ticket qualifies, submit the official form with evidence at least three working days ahead rather than no-showing.
