United drops flights-plus-spend path, raises 1K to 32,000 PQPs

What happened

United is lifting MileagePlus Premier 1K from 28,000 Premier Qualifying Points to 32,000 next year and ending the flights-plus-spend path to every Premier tier. Status will be earned only through PQPs.

Platinum today can be reached with 18,000 PQPs or with 15,000 PQPs plus 45 Premier qualifying flights. Only the PQP route remains, and the other published Premier tiers lose the same two-path structure. Spend-only qualification still applies to the lower three Premier tiers and still counts eligible United airfare and select United credit-card spend.

The Points Guy argues the change makes status harder for many loyal flyers, especially short-haul hub flyers who used a high flight count with lower spend, even as United pitches a single pathway as simpler. The column calls 32,000 PQPs the highest top-tier bar in the market. Alaska Atmos Rewards is moving the other way starting in 2027 with extra flight-count and distance paths beside spend. Members who relied on Premier qualifying flights should plan around the full PQP thresholds next year, including 32,000 for 1K.
