United Airlines Flight UA169 Strikes Bakery Truck and Light Pole on Approach to Newark

United flight UA169 from Venice struck a bakery delivery truck and a light pole on the New Jersey Turnpike during approach to Newark Liberty International Airport. The NTSB is investigating the incident; no passengers were injured

What happened

United Airlines flight UA169, a Boeing 767 arriving from Venice, Italy, with 221 passengers and 10 crew, struck a light pole and a Smith's Bakery delivery truck on the New Jersey Turnpike during its final approach to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). The aircraft was approaching Runway 29 when it came in too low. Dashcam footage shows the landing gear tire and underside of the plane hitting the truck, which was exiting the turnpike near the airport perimeter. The impact also damaged a light pole, which struck a Jeep on the turnpike. The bakery driver was hospitalized but survived. No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew on the United flight. The FAA and NTSB are investigating the cause, with preliminary indications suggesting pilot error or insufficient altitude. United stated the aircraft landed safely, taxied to the gate, and maintenance is evaluating damage. Normal operations resumed quickly after debris inspection
