Southwest removes Dallas-Tulsa passenger over under-seat space

What happened

Southwest deplaned musician Cody Blackbird from a Dallas to Tulsa flight on August 6, 2026 after he refused to stow a backpack under his seat. He put an instrument and a backpack in the overhead, saying he needed the floor space for blood flow related to a disability, and declined to discuss medical details in front of the cabin.

Crew later took him off the aircraft for not following instructions and because they were uncomfortable with him. A supervisor said he should not have been deplaned and that ADA accommodations override standard carry-on rules for non-disabled passengers. One Mile at a Time reports he was put on a later flight and delayed five hours. The blog doubted the ADA requires both items overhead rather than a checked bag and said the crew could have de-escalated, with both items likely allowed overhead on the next flight.

The episode shows a Southwest cabin crew can still remove a passenger over stowage before a supervisor applies an ADA exception. Anyone who needs the floor clear for a medical reason should assume the crew may still apply ordinary carry-on rules until a supervisor steps in.

There is nothing to book; travellers who need under-seat space for a medical reason should expect cabin crews may still enforce standard stowage until a supervisor intervenes.
