Southwest adds Platinum at 140,000 points on January 1, 2027

What happened

View from the Wing finds Southwest's 2027 Rapid Rewards top tier mostly restacks perks frequent Southwest flyers already held. Elites still get extra-legroom and family seating on Basic fares.

A-List becomes Silver on January 1, 2027 at 35,000 tier qualifying points, with 25 one-way flights as the other path. Gold replaces A-List Preferred at 65,000 points or 50 flights. Platinum includes unlimited Companion Pass at 140,000 points or 100 flights. Silver's flight bonus is 40%. Gold's is 60%. Platinum's is 120% rather than Gold's 100%. Platinum also adds a third free checked bag and boarding ahead of Gold. View from the Wing notes that earlier boarding has limited value because boarding order no longer determines seats. Silver may select extra-legroom from 48 hours before departure. Gold and Platinum can select extra-legroom at booking. Each level covers up to 8 companions.

Southwest gives neither complimentary premium-cabin upgrades nor alliance elite recognition. The bonuses match American and Delta at equivalent levels, with 3 tiers rather than 4, and extra-legroom on Basic fares remains the gap versus the Big Three.

A-List Preferred members who already hold Companion Pass gain little by pushing to Platinum.

Takeaway
Do not chase Platinum just for new perks if you already have A-List Preferred and Companion Pass; weigh Southwest status against the Big Three mainly if you buy Basic fares or need extra-legroom seats for a group.
