What happened
American Express accounts that already have Pay Over Time, including cards with no preset spending limit, will have the feature turned on automatically on February 1, 2027, ending an opt-in that sometimes paid 10,000 Membership Rewards points or more.
Amex charge cards used to require a full payment every month. Pay Over Time later let those cardholders carry a balance with interest, up to a Pay Over Time Limit, as an optional choice. After the change, statements will show a Minimum Payment Due as an extra option. Full payment by the due date still means no interest.
No guidance has been given on turning the feature back off. The Membership Rewards bonuses that came with opting in are likely over. A carried balance will accrue interest. Paying only the minimum extends how long that interest runs.
Treat Pay Over Time as on by February 1, 2027 and keep paying in full to avoid interest instead of waiting for another opt-in bonus.
