What happened
American Express will shut Fixed Points Travel on January 6, 2027 for non-premium Canadian Membership Rewards cards, including Cobalt and Gold Rewards. Centurion and Platinum cardholders keep the same chart, as do enrolled Corporate Platinum accounts. Those cards can book only through Travel & Lifestyle Services.
A short-haul return takes 15,000 points for a base fare up to $300, or 2 cents per point at the cap. The full ticket charges to the card, then a statement credit for the base fare posts within 10 business days. Cash covers taxes and any fare above the cap. Only economy and business class qualify.
Membership Rewards still transfer to Aeroplan at 1:1, and Flexible Points Travel remains at 1,000 points per $10. Quebec residents lose the program for points earned after the cutoff. Cobalt and Gold Rewards holders have about 11 weeks left, though Amex may delay the January 6, 2027 shutdown without notice.
Book a short-haul that hits the $300 cap before January 6, 2027 if the card is losing the chart; otherwise keep transferring Membership Rewards to Aeroplan.
