United’s New 787-9 With ‘United Elevate’ Interiors Returns to Boeing for Repairs

United Airlines' first Boeing 787-9 featuring the new 'United Elevate' interiors is being sent to Boeing's Moses Lake maintenance base after weeks of reliability issues and multiple groundings

What happened

United Airlines' first Boeing 787-9 equipped with the new 'United Elevate' interiors (registration N61101) is returning to Boeing for repairs after experiencing significant maintenance issues since its debut in April 2026. The aircraft, which features new Polaris business class suites and the United 100th anniversary decal, had a troubled start with an inaugural flight diversion and subsequent maintenance delays. Over the past two weeks, it has operated only a single passenger flight (SFO-SIN) before being grounded again. After a brief return to service for a London flight, it has been grounded in San Francisco for nearly five days. The plane is scheduled to fly to Boeing's maintenance base in Moses Lake (MWH) on Saturday, June 20, 2026, for a 'straightforward repair' of a non-minor issue. This adds to concerns about quality control on new 787s, following similar early maintenance struggles with American Airlines' new 787-9s
