Lufthansa B787 Nose Gear Retracts at Gate, Plunges onto Tarmac at Frankfurt

A new Lufthansa Boeing 787 Dreamliner suffered a nose-landing gear retraction while parked at Frankfurt Airport before boarding for Los Angeles, injuring catering and cabin staff and damaging the aircraft

What happened

A brand new Lufthansa Boeing 787 Dreamliner experienced a serious ground accident at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) on Thursday afternoon. Moments before boarding commenced for flight LH450 to Los Angeles, the aircraft's nose landing gear suddenly retracted while the plane was still on the tarmac at the gate. The 'belly flop' injured several catering staff and cabin crew members who were preparing the aircraft. The aircraft, received only a few months ago, is expected to be out of commission for an extended period depending on fuselage damage. Passengers on the affected flight are eligible for compensation under EC261/2004, including duty of care, accommodations, and rebooking. The incident draws parallels to a similar 787 gear error by British Airways five years prior, where a safety pin was inserted into the wrong hole due to Boeing's design
