What happened
One Mile at a Time reports that a Lufthansa Airbus A380 operating LH459 from San Francisco touched down short of Munich runway 26L at 5:24 p.m. on 17 August 2026. Aircraft D-AIML struck lights in the threshold area, damaging tires and the lights, then taxied to the gate. Germany's BFU is investigating. The jet was still on the ground in Munich nearly two days later.
Munich runway 26L is 4,000 meters long. A NOTAM had suspended its ILS approach from 31 May through 31 August 2026. Heavy thunderstorm rain was falling, with 12-knot winds. Visibility at times dropped to just over one kilometer. On 15 August 2026, a Vietnam Airlines 787-9 hit lights at the opposite end during takeoff on the same runway. It had damaged tires and a tail strike.
Lufthansa long-haul passengers into Munich may see this A380 out of service. Runway 26L faces extra scrutiny after two lighting-damage incidents in two days. Watch LH459 from San Francisco and Munich 26L operations if already ticketed that way.
