What happened
Lufthansa is introducing a new business class product on its entire fleet of eight Airbus A380s, utilizing Thompson Aero Vantage XL seats rather than its newer Allegris product. The first aircraft (registration D-AIMC) entered service on April 23, 2026, with the second (D-AIMH) undergoing retrofit in Dresden starting April 21, 2026. The project aims to complete all eight planes by mid-2027. The new business class cabin features a staggered configuration with 68 seats (down from 78), offering direct aisle access, 58cm width, and at least 2m bed length. First class (8 seats), premium economy (52 seats), and economy (371 seats) remain largely unchanged, aside from minor entertainment upgrades. These aircraft will serve key routes from Munich including Boston, Delhi, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Washington. This retrofit signals Lufthansa's long-term commitment to the A380, reversing earlier plans to retire the type. The decision to use Vantage XL instead of Allegris is attributed to cost and configuration factors for the wide-body retrofit
