Delta's Asia Growth: Capacity Outpaces Yield as United Exec Comments on Competition

Delta's Pacific capacity growth (8%) outpaced yield growth (7%) in Q2 2026, contrasting with United's stronger yield performance. United's CCO noted new Delta competition on LA-HKG is struggling to fill planes

What happened

Delta is aggressively expanding its long-haul network to Asia, launching nonstop flights to Hong Kong, Manila (2027), and Singapore to compete with United and Korean Air. However, Q2 2026 data shows Delta's Pacific capacity growth (8%) exceeded its yield growth (7%), a negative outlier compared to United (10.9% yield on 4.1% capacity) and American (17.3% yield on 8.2% capacity). United Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella reportedly stated in an internal meeting that Delta's new LA-HKG service is struggling to fill planes due to pricing. While Delta's long-haul investments are expected to take time to become profitable, the current yield gap raises questions about the long-term sustainability of its Asia growth strategy
