What happened
Two Delta aircraft experienced a close call over Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) due to an air traffic controller's situational awareness failure. Delta flight DL2472 (Airbus A321) was departing for Rochester (ROC) on runway 26L. Delta flight DL1568 (Boeing 737) was arriving from Pittsburgh (PIT) and cleared to land on runway 26R. DL1568 performed a go-around after a Frontier Airlines jet ahead of it did not clear the runway with sufficient buffer. While DL2472 was taking off and DL1568 was going around on parallel runings, the air traffic controller instructed the departing DL2472 to make a sharp right turn. This maneuver put the departing plane directly into the path of the arriving DL1568, which was to its right. The planes came within approximately 500 feet vertically, triggering a TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System) alert. The controller appeared distracted, initially giving taxi instructions while managing the two aircraft, before being replaced after about a minute. Both planes continued to their respective destinations without further incident
