What happened
Delta will have flight attendants collect every airline-provided service item before pushback starting September 1, 2026, including pre-departure drinks, and is calling it an FAA-driven industry-wide change. FAR 121.577 has prohibited those items at passenger seats since 1992. Crews today often collect drinks during taxi after the cabin is secured for takeoff.
One Mile at a Time has not found a new FAR or matching notices from other carriers and suspects tighter enforcement of the old rule. Collection covers disposable and non-disposable serviceware. Passenger-owned drinks and water bottles left at seats generally fall outside the collection rule. The post expects Delta to keep pouring pre-departure drinks more often than some rivals, though the tighter window could still lead crews to serve fewer of them.
Delta's pre-departure drinks may be collected sooner after boarding, and some crews may shorten or skip that service to hit the earlier stow deadline. Drink any airline-poured beverage quickly after boarding and watch whether that service shrinks after September 1.
