American Express to Retire Old Blue Cash Card, Convert Holders to Blue Cash Everyday

American Express is discontinuing the Old Blue Cash card, automatically converting existing holders to the Blue Cash Everyday Card effective March 4, 2026

What happened

American Express is retiring the legacy Old Blue Cash Card, which has been closed to new applicants for years. Existing cardholders will be automatically converted to the Blue Cash Everyday Card on March 4, 2026. The Old Blue Cash offered 5% cash back on everyday purchases (including supermarkets, U.S. gas stations, and select drugstores) up to $50,000 per reward year, after an initial $6,500 spent at 1%. The replacement Blue Cash Everyday Card offers 3% on U.S. supermarkets, online retail, and gasoline, each capped at $6,000 per calendar year, with 1% on other purchases. This marks the end of a popular unlimited cash-back product for frequent fliers and points optimizers who held onto it for its grandfathered earning structure
