American Airlines Credit Card Eligibility Rules: Best Strategy For Citi Approval

American Airlines has moved its co-branded credit cards exclusively to Citi following the discontinuation of Barclays cards. Eligibility now follows Citi's rules: 48-month bonus rule per card, max one Citi card every 8 days, and max two every 65 days

What happened

  • Bonus Eligibility: The welcome bonus is unavailable to those who received a bonus on that exact card in the past 48 months. Having received a bonus on a different AAdvantage card within 48 months does not disqualify you.
  • Citi Application Rules: Applicants can get approved for at most one Citi card every eight days, and at most two Citi cards every 65 days.
  • Current Card Lineup: The five cards open to new applicants are the Executive World Elite ($595 fee), Globe Mastercard ($350 fee), Business World Elite ($99 fee, waived first year), Platinum Select ($99 fee, waived first year), and MileUp (no fee).
  • Credit Score: No consistent rule, but 'good' to 'excellent' (700+) is recommended. This shift means previous Barclays-specific eligibility no longer applies, and churners must adhere to Citi's stricter application windows and per-card bonus clocks

American Airlines has completed the transition of its co-branded credit card portfolio from Barclays to Citi, with Barclays cards now discontinued. All US AAdvantage cards are now issued by Citi. Key eligibility and churn rules for Citi AAdvantage cards:
