What happened
Economy tickets on American’s North American flights that sell premium economy will no longer skip into business class on complimentary elite upgrades starting August 25, 2026. Economy can still clear into premium economy. Premium-economy tickets can still clear into business. Every AAdvantage elite on those flights is affected when space is available.
The limit applies only when premium economy is a marketed cabin, not Main Cabin Extra, and only inside North America. International complimentary upgrades are unchanged. Premium economy currently flies a small set of transcontinental and Hawaii routes, including JFK-LAX and DFW-HNL. Flights without that cabin, including older A321Ts, keep the old double-upgrade path. Confirmed business-class upgrades remain valid only if the itinerary is not changed. American may add more routes as the cabin expands.
A systemwide upgrade can still jump from economy past premium economy into business. Buying an instant cash or miles upgrade into premium economy also leaves an elite eligible for a further complimentary move to business. Book premium economy or use a systemwide upgrade for business class on those transcontinental and Hawaii flights after August 25, 2026.
