What happened
On Sunday, March 22, 2026, at approximately 11:40 PM, an Air Canada Jazz CRJ-900 (flight from Montreal) collided with a fire truck on runway 4 at New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA). The aircraft was landing at roughly 100 mph when the impact occurred. The cause was identified as an air traffic control error. The controller, who was working alone and managing an emergency involving a United flight (UA2384) that had rejected takeoffs, inadvertently cleared the fire truck to cross the runway while the plane was on final approach. Audio confirms the controller realized the mistake too late. Casualties include the death of the two pilots (captain and first officer) and critical injuries to several firefighters. The aircraft had 72 passengers. LaGuardia Airport was closed following the incident for rescue efforts
