Two American AA2482 jets share a Phoenix ATC frequency

What happened

American Airlines Chicago to Phoenix flight AA2482 landed at 12:13AM, well behind its 10:43PM arrival, while Phoenix to Chicago AA2482 took off at 11:58PM against an 11:45PM departure on the night of August 13, 2026. One Mile at a Time reports the two jets appeared on one Phoenix frequency under the same American 2482 callsign, flying toward each other.

American uses AA2482 in both directions between Chicago O'Hare and Phoenix, typically on Boeing 737-800s. The inbound flight arrived more than an hour late, so both jets were in the Phoenix area together. The controller identified one as the arrival and one as the departure. He said he had never seen that situation in 25 years. Flights that share a number in the air usually get a modified callsign, often a letter suffix. It remains unclear whether the airline or ATC should have assigned a unique callsign.

The episode is a rare operations glitch from a reused flight number plus a delay, not a change to miles or bookings. No booking action follows; the controller and both crews resolved the duplicate callsign in real time.
