Lufthansa Group Unveils 'Back Seat' Economy and 'First Row' Business Class Seat Categories

Effective July 22, 2026, Lufthansa Group airlines introduce 'Back Seat' (economy rear) and 'First Row Seat' (business front) as new paid categories, altering seat assignment pricing and elite access

What happened

  • Back Seat (Economy Class): Located in the last four or more rows of the economy cabin. Priced below the standard 'Classic Seat,' this is the most affordable advanced seat reservation option. It remains free for HON Circle/Senator members and those traveling on Economy Flex fares. This change harmonizes the group's continental seat portfolio and introduces dynamic pricing for seat assignments, effectively creating four economy seat categories (Back, Classic, etc.) and monetizing the front-row business class exclusivity previously held by top-tier elites

Lufthansa Group (including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, and Brussels Airlines) is expanding its short- and medium-haul seating options with two new chargeable categories effective July 22, 2026. - First Row Seat (Business Class): Located in the first row of the aircraft. Previously reserved for HON Circle and Senator members, these seats can now be purchased by others. HON Circle and Senator members retain free access.
