What happened
Lufthansa announced it will exercise its option to acquire an additional 49% stake in ITA Airways, bringing its total ownership to 90% for a fixed price of 325 million euros. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, pending regulatory approvals from the European Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice. ITA Airways is already integrated into the Lufthansa Group, using the Miles&More frequent flyer program and unified booking systems. The remaining 10% stake is held by the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance, which may be acquired in 2028. This move solidifies Lufthansa's control over the Italian carrier as it completes its integration into the Star Alliance network
