What happened

Chase updated the eligibility terms for the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred cards on January 22, 2026. Previously, these cards were mutually exclusive or linked by a 48-month bonus history rule. Under the new terms, the cards are treated as distinct products for bonus eligibility. Specifically, if you currently have or have previously held the Sapphire Preferred, you are still eligible for the Sapphire Reserve welcome bonus (currently 150,000 points). Conversely, holding the Reserve does not block the Preferred bonus. This change effectively allows cardholders to stack the welcome bonuses of both cards, provided they meet the individual 'once in a lifetime' bonus rule for each specific product
