What happened
American Airlines is confirming systemwide upgrades into business class on specified Thanksgiving and Christmas flights for passengers who hold paid Premium Economy and request the upgrade by 11:59 p.m. Central on September 30, 2026. American says it will try to confirm within 3 to 4 hours, then needs 7 to 10 business days for reissue and deduction.
Eligible flying is American-marketed and operated U.S. service to Europe, with South America and Asia included, plus Boston to Los Angeles and JFK to Los Angeles or San Francisco, both ways. Request on aa.com even if it only offers a waitlist. No registration is required. Coach can buy up into Premium Economy, then request. Award tickets and partner-operated flights do not qualify. Other domestic routes do not qualify. Hawaii and several other long-haul cities are excluded. Business class must still be for sale for the whole party. Domestic connections still need regular space.
Systemwide upgrades start at 175,000 Loyalty Points. Unconfirmed requests can be refunded to the original payment method only if Reservations is contacted by October 6, 2026.
