Alaska Airlines Denies Family Boarding, Downgrades to Coach After Visa Glitch

A family of four with US permanent resident status was wrongly denied boarding on Alaska Airlines due to a visa document-check glitch, rebooked six hours later in coach, and kicked off their next flight over a seat dispute

What happened

A family of four holding Swiss passports and US permanent resident status flew Alaska Airlines from Missoula (MSO) to Seattle (SEA) to Vancouver (YVR) on June 23, 2026. Despite US permanent residents not needing visas for Canada since 2022, Alaska's system flagged them for document checks. After manual verification confirmed they were clear, a gate-scanning glitch caused them to miss their flight. They were rebooked six hours later and downgraded from First Class to Coach without compensation. Upon arriving at the next gate, they were kicked off the plane by the purser over a seat dispute after asking to board First Class to mitigate further document issues
