What happened

Spirit Airlines has officially closed its doors, suspending operations in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 2, 2026. The airline, which had been considering liquidation, announced that all flights were canceled and travelers should not go to the airport. This abrupt grounding left thousands of employees without jobs and travelers stranded. The shutdown follows a last-ditch attempt at a deal with the federal government that did not come to fruition. The U.S. Department of Transportation stated that major airlines have agreed to actions to support Spirit ticketholders, including reduced "rescue" fares on routes Spirit flew. Most major airlines are also extending travel privileges to former Spirit employees. Spirit had hoped to exit its second bankruptcy by summer but saw cash reserves deplete faster than expected due to surging jet fuel prices and rising costs
