What happened
On July 28, 2026, a 39-year-old Malaysia Airlines pilot was caught smuggling drugs at Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta Airport (CGK) after arriving on flight MH727 from Kuala Lumpur (KUL). Customs officers identified a suspicious bag containing 14 packages of over 70,000 ecstasy pills (57 lbs / 26 kg) and a separate package of methamphetamine. The pilot, who was offered 50,000 MYR (~$11,700 USD) for the job, admitted to two prior smuggling trips. He was subsequently drug-tested and tested positive for methamphetamine, ecstasy, and cocaine. Given Indonesia's strict anti-drug laws, he faces potential life imprisonment or the death penalty
