What happened
A Malaysia Airlines second officer was arrested in Indonesia with more than 70,000 ecstasy pills, prompting Malaysia Aviation Group on 7 August 2026 to order mandatory drug tests of every Malaysia Airlines pilot by 15 August 2026. MAG says the officer was a jump-seat observer and was not flying the aircraft. One Mile at a Time reports he tested positive for multiple drugs and carried a vial of urine.
The first wave covers all 1,260 Malaysia Airlines pilots. Screening is under way. Anyone not cleared by 15 August 2026 stays off the roster until MAG procedures and regulators allow a return. LoyaltyLobby reports that non-participants will be put on leave. MAG says later phases will cover other active pilots and then cabin crew, layered onto random testing already in place.
Malaysia Airlines is a oneworld carrier, and untested pilots can stay off flying through mid-August 2026. Watch Malaysia Airlines operations around the 15 August 2026 screening cutoff.
