The European Union has officially delayed the launch of ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) until 2027, moving it from its previously scheduled fourth quarter of 2026. The delay is attributed to technical glitches and slow deployment of the EES (Entry/Exit System), which requires non-EU travelers to scan fingerprints and facial images. ETIAS is a mandatory online pre-authorization for U.S. citizens visiting the 30 countries of the Schengen Area (excluding Ireland and Cyprus). The fee has been increased from the initial proposal of 7 euros to 20 euros (approx. $23). This follows similar delays for the UK's ETA program
