What happened
Detroit now has no remaining flights to Iceland after Icelandair ended Detroit service in early 2026 and Delta quietly dropped Detroit-Keflavik. One Mile at a Time reports that Icelandair launched the route in 2023 to serve local demand and offer stopovers over its Keflavik hub.
Delta treats Detroit as a fortress hub and announced the overlapping route shortly after Icelandair, then started flying it first. Icelandair left once the overlapping service could not work. Delta launched Iceland flights from Boston instead.
One Mile at a Time argues Delta matched only to defend the hub and had little reason to keep the route once the rival was gone, leaving Detroit-based points travellers with no nonstop Iceland option. The post flags a similar pattern on Minneapolis-Dublin, which Delta matched after Aer Lingus entered and which Aer Lingus is leaving after the 2026 season.
