China Suspends All General Aviation Flying After Plane Crashes Into Beijing’s CITIC Tower

A small two-seater plane crashed into Beijing’s CITIC Tower on June 26, 2026. In response, Chinese authorities suspended all general aviation flying nationwide while investigating the pilot's "personal reasons."

What happened

On Friday, June 26, 2026, a Sunward SA 60L Aurora (registration B-12PP) operated by Shuangyue General Aviation crashed into Beijing’s CITIC Tower, the city’s tallest skyscraper. The single pilot, a 66-year-old Beijing resident, was killed; 13 others were injured. The Chinese government completed its investigation rapidly, attributing the crash to "personal reasons" based on the pilot's diary, which contained expressions of ending his life. A key operational impact was the suspension of all general aviation flying in China. While the damage to the 109-story tower was limited to glass panels with no structural damage, the incident prompted heightened surveillance and the temporary halt of GA operations
