Aspen Airport (ASE) to Close for Runway Redevelopment from April to November 2027

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) will close completely from April 4 through November 19, 2027, for runway reconstruction and terminal construction, impacting all commercial and general aviation traffic

What happened

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) has announced a complete closure for commercial and general aviation operations from 11 PM on Sunday, April 4, through 7 PM on Friday, November 19, 2027. The closure, spanning approximately seven months, is timed to avoid the peak winter season. The closure is necessary to complete the reconstruction of the existing runway to meet current FAA standards. The runway will be shifted slightly west and widened by 50% (from 100 feet to 150 feet). Preparatory road work begins this summer. Additionally, construction on a new commercial passenger terminal and private facility will begin in April 2027, with an expected opening in 2029. During the 2027 closure, the airport will be fully closed to traffic, including terminal access
