American adds 8 long-haul routes for summer 2027, on sale August 31

What happened

American Airlines is expected to open sales on August 31, 2026 for flights to Porto, a city the carrier has never served. Vienna is new as well. No other U.S. airline would serve Vienna, and the full set is 8 long-haul international routes for summer 2027.

Reykjavik, last served in 2019, comes back on A321neo jets that lack lie-flat seats, and the front cabin is due to be sold as premium economy. New routes will serve Amsterdam. Barcelona and Nice, already in the network, get new flying as well. An extra daily flight will operate between New York and London. The Chicago to Tokyo route, announced earlier, takes over from Japan Airlines.

Most of the summer-seasonal routes still lack set season lengths. Vienna flying is due to last into early January 2028, covering the Christmas market season. Set an alert for August 31, 2026 if Vienna or Porto is on the itinerary.
