TSA Trials New Automated E-Gates at Charlotte Douglas International Airport

The TSA is trialing new self-service e-gates at CLT's Security Checkpoint 2, available to TSA PreCheck members. The system scans IDs and takes photos automatically, offering a slightly faster process than traditional officer checks

What happened

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has begun trialing new automated "e-gates" at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), specifically at Security Checkpoint 2. Available across eight lanes, the system allows TSA PreCheck members to bypass human ID checks. The process involves scanning a Real ID-compliant driver's license, passport, or mobile ID, followed by a camera photo capture. The TSA software compares the live photo to the ID. For those using TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, the process is even faster, requiring only a look at the camera. The agency notes the process is approximately three seconds quicker on average. This is the first deployment of its kind at a U.S. security checkpoint, with the potential to serve as a model for other airports
