The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has quietly unveiled new automated 'e-gates' at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), marking the first national trial of the technology. The system automates the ID presentation process: passengers scan their driver's license or passport at the gate, have their photo taken for comparison, and proceed to screening without handing physical ID to an officer. Officers remain on hand to monitor the lanes. Currently, eight TSA PreCheck lanes at CLT are equipped with the e-gates. The agency reports that the setup saves travelers an average of three seconds per person, but aims to free up officers for other duties to improve overall efficiency. This trial follows the recent expansion of TSA PreCheck Touchless ID lanes and comes as the agency rolls out more robust technology across the country
