Authorities in Miami arrested Lukas Nicolas Varela-Torres, 23, a former receptionist at the Trump International Beach Resort in Sunny Isles Beach. He is charged with grand theft, organized scheme to defraud, and other counts after management detected irregularities in guest payment transactions. The scheme involved Varela-Torres accepting cash payments from guests for lodging and services, pocketing the cash, and then voiding or modifying the original cash transactions to replace them with his own credit card payments. This allowed him to collect credit card loyalty rewards or cashback while the hotel absorbed the credit card merchant processing fees (estimated at 1.5-2.5%). The total financial loss to the property was approximately $3,100 in processing fees, suggesting he processed roughly $155,000 in cash. He is currently awaiting trial with a $6,000 bail bond and an ICE detainer
