What happened
Passport and ID checks are back on flights and ferries between Spain and Italy, with Spain's controls in place until early September unless Italy drops its own. Italy moved first after its prime minister called for Spain to be removed from Schengen following a mass crossing into Ceuta, a Spanish territory in North Africa. Spain answered with the same checks. The two countries have no land border.
Travel inside Schengen usually skips ID and passport control, though airlines can still ask for ID. Anyone flying or sailing between Spain and Italy should expect to present a passport or national ID even though both countries remain in Schengen.
Bring a passport or national ID on those air and sea trips at least through early September and watch whether Italy drops its checks.
