What happened
Brazilian low-cost carrier GOL Linhas Aéreas has confirmed plans to lease at least five Airbus A330-900neo wide-body aircraft from leasing company Avolon, with deliveries expected in 2026 and 2027. The deal includes an option for two additional aircraft, bringing the total potential fleet to seven. This move marks GOL's significant expansion beyond its current narrow-body Boeing 737 fleet into the long-haul market. The aircraft are expected to operate out of São Paulo Guarulhos (GRU), with planned destinations including Miami and Orlando in the US, and Lisbon, London, Paris, and Rome in Europe. To support this expansion, GOL will introduce a business class cabin, likely featuring flat beds with direct aisle access, similar to the configuration found on Azul's A330-900neos. There is speculation that GOL may be taking over planes previously ordered by Azul, which recently emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This strategic shift positions GOL to compete more directly in transatlantic and transpacific markets, offering passengers a premium product on routes previously served only by narrow-body aircraft or other carriers
