Bangkok Airports Introduce Manual Checked Baggage Inspections Starting October 16, 2026

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand announces that security officers can now open and manually inspect checked baggage without the passenger present, effective October 16, 2026, to combat drug smuggling

What happened

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) and Airports of Thailand have announced a new procedure for checked baggage allowing for manual inspection starting October 16, 2026. Influenced by a recent drug smuggling scandal involving a Thai Airways crew member, the new rules authorize security personnel to open bags if suspicious items are detected via X-ray or automated analysis. Crucially, this inspection can occur without the passenger being present. The process will be video recorded for transparency, and a notice will be placed inside the bag. Prohibited items like explosives or firearms will be seized. Passengers are advised to use TSA locks, as other locks may be forcefully opened, and to ensure valuables are protected
