Why it matters
Affects 5 airline programs (Air France-KLM, IAG, Lufthansa...).
What happened
Portugal is moving forward with the privatization of national carrier TAP Air Portugal, aiming to sell a 44.9% stake with the possibility of a majority stake later. Two major airline groups, Air France-KLM and Lufthansa Group, have submitted non-binding offers and are now invited to make binding offers. The government will retain 50.1% ownership, while employees will receive a 5% stake. The initiative, relaunched in summer 2025 after political stability returned, seeks to leverage TAP's strong network to Brazil, Africa, and the US. Strategic value lies in potential synergies and preventing competitor entry, though regulatory approval and integration of North America operations remain key challenges. TAP has returned to profitability in recent years (2022-2025), though profits have been modest. The privatization could significantly impact frequent flyers by altering TAP's alliance status, award chart partnerships, and route network dynamics
