Why it matters
Affects Singapore Airlines loyalty members and route planners. Spans 3 hotel programs (Accor Live Limitless, Marriott, Marriott Bonvoy). Card-issuer angle via Chase.
What happened
Marriott Bonvoy has updated its terms and conditions to add a new section with "special terms applicable to members with Chinese citizenship residing in Chinese mainland." This update commits the company to providing prior notice if adjustments to loyalty program benefits, amenities, offers, or awards are likely to have a material adverse impact on members' core rights and interests. The clause states: "Should such adjustments be likely to have a material adverse impact on the core rights and interests of Members, the Company will, in compliance with applicable legal requirements, provide prior notice to members in a reasonable manner." This change is driven by consumer protections in China. However, it is limited to Chinese citizens residing in mainland China and does not apply to the global membership base. The terms are somewhat vague regarding the definition of "material adverse impact" and the specific timeframe for notice. Notably, dynamic award pricing changes, which are a frequent source of devaluation, are likely excluded as they reflect market conditions rather than structural program changes
